If you were asked what the 3 things are that come to mind when you are thinking of a typical summer day in a South African backyard, what would that be? I'm sure the answers will be quite varied and include a couple of things such as swimming pools, lawnmowers and happy families, but I was thinking more along the line of the 3 B's: Beer, bread and braai! South Africans love to socialize and beer, bread and braai usually forms an integral part of any successful braai! Therefore, it should come as no surprise that there is actually a braai recipe available which caters for the 3B generation: Beer bread for the braai! Nothing compliments a piece of well matured rump and a pack of proper "boerewors" quite like a freshly baked loaf of bread! The ingredients for this braai recipe can be found in most kitchens and the bread can be ready to be buttered in less than an hour! You'd need the following: 500gram self-raising flour, 50ml water, one teaspoon of thyme, half a teaspoon of salt, 50ml sunflower seeds (this can also be replaced with sesame or similar seeds), 125g of cheese cut into small cubes (cheddar, gouda or mozzarella, depending on your taste preference) and a bit of maldon salt to sprinkle on top. And then the most important ingredient: 340ml of beer! This braai recipe is really as easy as pie (or bread)! Simply mix all the ingredients together in a mixing bowl – you can add a bit of water if you feel that the dough is too dry to work with. Once all the flour is properly moistened the mixture is ready to be transferred to a small greased loaf tin. Bake the beer bread in a preheated oven at 180C for an hour and leave to cool for 10 minutes before serving this with plenty of butter! I'm sure that you would agree that this braai recipe is really easy to follow and with minimal effort you can have your guests begging for a second (and third and fourth!) slice of beer bread! |

There’s nothing better than sharing a traditional barbecue with family
and friends. Meaty steaks, breasts of marinated chicken, spicy sausages
and delicious lamb chops … all sizzling over a glowing, charcoal fire.
Add to this a cold beer, a glass of wine or a fresh fruit juice and
you’re in heaven!
