South Africans absolutely love to braai If someone celebrates a
birthday, we braai When we manage to get off work early, we braai When
we have nothing else to do, we braai And of course, when our favourite
rugby team plays, we braai A well-equipped braai area and decent braai
equipment is all we need for quality time with friends and family.
The perfect braai area starts with the perfect braai equipment. It is
important that your braai area caters for the type and size of braais
that you will be having 90% of the time. If you generally only entertain
small groups of people, you do not have to equip your braai area to
cater for an entire rugby team. On the other hand, if you like
entertaining large groups of people you will need to invest in braai
equipment that will not restrict you and allow for only two steaks on
the braai at any given time.
An important consideration is charcoal or gas, or maybe a combination
of both. There are many innovative braais available on the marketplace
which allows for year-round braaing. You also need to determine whether
you want a freestanding unit or if you want a construction that you can
build into your entertainment area. Some units even have automatic
charcoal makers - these units are generally so easy to operate as long
as you stick to the instructions.
It is important to design your braai area in such a way that everyone
can interact and be part of the conversation. How many times have you
attended a braai where only one or two people could be accommodated
around the braai while the rest were twiddling their thumbs in front of
the tv? Make sure that there is enough space for all the guests - the
wives and children also want to be part of the conversation.
The perfect braai area should essentially be an extension of your kitchen. Counter units on wheels, prep bowls and other utensils should ideally form part of your braai equipment setup - this will eliminate the "to and from the kitchen" every time you have a braai. |

There’s nothing better than sharing a traditional barbecue with family
and friends. Meaty steaks, breasts of marinated chicken, spicy sausages
and delicious lamb chops … all sizzling over a glowing, charcoal fire.
Add to this a cold beer, a glass of wine or a fresh fruit juice and
you’re in heaven!
