How To Build A Braai And How Not Too PDF Print E-mail
The braai is a great South African tradition, particularly in the Afrikaans culture. A lot of people spend a great deal of time each weekend gathered around a fire waiting for it to cool down so they can cook their meat with a drink in their hand. There is a certain amount of skill involved in building a braai though. Here is how to build a braai.
The first things you will need is some charcoal and some firelighters. You should put a few pieces of firelighter into the bottom of your braai. Then you heap the charcoal over them. Then you put a few additional firelighters around the charcoal and light them. This should get things burning nicely. It seems really easy, does it not?

Now that you know how to build a braai, let us take a look at how not to build a braai.

You should not use an entire pack of firelighters. This will make the fire too quick burning and your fire will be really hot and then burn out before it cools down enough to cook meat on. You should also be careful about how much charcoal you use for the exact same reason. The idea on a braai fire is that it is really hot at first but coals down to coals at hat you are able to cook on.

Learning the theory of how to build a braai is really easy. The principles are simple and any monkey could do it. The trick is to build a braai fire that is not going to burn out at a temperature that is too high to actually cook meat on. You do not want flash cooked and therefore burned meat. You want to be able to cook your meat slowly so that it is tender and cooked through. So learn a little moderation when you build a braai. You can always add more charcoal or firelighters to make the fire burn longer or hotter. It is a lot more difficult to get the already burning fire to cool down if you do not have the space to spread it out a little bit.
