Outdoor Braai: Why It Makes Me Proud to Be South African PDF Print E-mail
There are two things that are proudly South African and available no-where else in the world other than in South Africa. And if it is, it is still not up the original, South African standards. These two jewels are Biltong and Braai. Having an outdoor braai is the main way of celebration between South Africans and in and around South Africa. And the South Africans that have relocated overseas have taken this tradition with them and have spread the proudly South African love there. An no, a Braai is not a Barbeque - truly not even close.

The Rugby World Cup, the Cricket World Cup, the soccer, tennis, hockey, swimming, etc, World Cup. These are the top reasons or causes of an outdoor braai celebration. Other than this, anything else that deserves a celebration of some sort, big or small, deserves a truly South African braai. That is what South Africa is all about: the people, the culture, the heritage. And the Braai fits perfectly into all three of these elements that make South Africa one of the best companies in the world. It is about sharing, laughing, celebrating, joy, love, the nation coming together, and happiness.

Even though the Braai will always be a part of the South African culture and heritage, I fear that the vibe around and during a Braai is slowly dying. The outdoor braai used to be a cheap way of cooking amazing food, while having a celebratious, vibey get together with friends and family. It was about more than the food, so much more. Nowadays, with the coming of the gas braai, people tend to want braai just to have the food taste good: no more collecting wood in, no more struggling to light the fire, no more feeling when the fire is hot enough, no more enjoying the whole process, while enjoying the drinks, the company, the celebration, the vibe.

However, this is not going to stop me from having an outdoor braai; a proper outdoor braai. Yes, it is sad that the way of the braai might change, but is doesn't have to die down completely. So, get the wood and matches, and have a proudly South African outdoor braai.
