So, summer has arrived and you have decided to get into the full swing of things by learning how to braai? You may up until now have been the butt of all jokes as you are the only one amongst your friends who still has not learnt the skill, or you may already know how but simple want to improve on your technique. Whatever your reason I am here to help you learn how to braai. In this article I will be going over some basic rules of how to braai.
Equipment: Your braai equipment is essential and so we will start with that. In order to braai you will need. o A built in braai, portable braai or eight bricks with which to make a temporary braai. o A grill
o Wood or charcoal
o Fire-starters or newspaper
o Matches or lighter
o Braai tongs or a braai fork
Food: Well you can decide what you want to cook on the braai just make sure of the following points. o Meat must be washed and spiced and stored in a cool place until ready to be cooked. o If you are planning on putting vegetables on your braai, make sure to wrap them in tin foil. You can place vegetables which have been wrapped in tin foil such as raw potatoes and onions in amongst the coals when they are not flaming. Other vegetables can be wrapped in foil and placed on top of the grill.
o Do not place the meat on the grill whilst the coals are still flaming. Wait until the flames have gone down. Start by placing red meats first, then your chicken. If you are planning on putting fish on the braai, keep in mind that fish does not need to be cooked too long and so you can place it on the coals when they are medium heat.
o When putting red meat on the braai it is better to baste it with the marinade after it has been cooking on the grill for a few minutes as the marinade tends to burn. So folks, there you have it. How to braai in a few simple steps. |
